Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a condition in which blood clots form within the deeper veins of the body - usually within the legs. It causes a range of uncomfortable symptoms, including pain and swelling - but it can also present without any symptoms.
DVT is typically caused by certain medical conditions, such as blood clotting disorders, obesity, heart failure, cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease. It can also be caused by sitting or lying down for long periods of time, as the muscles in the legs aren't contracting to circulate the blood.
While DVT can present without any symptoms, Dr Adbullah recommends scheduling an appointment if you notice the following:
- Sudden pain, swelling or redness in legs or arms (mostly unilateral).
- Enlarged, hard, tender, visible veins.
- Warmth in the affected area.
These symptoms typically present on only the affected leg, there is rarely swelling in both legs as a result of DVT. Timely diagnosis and management of DVT can be a life-saver.
If you are diagnosed with DVT, the following treatments may help shrink and eventually destroy the clot so you can return to normal life.
- Blood thinners like heparin or warfarin.
- Thrombolytics which dissolve the clot.
- Implanting an inferior vena cava filter
- Compression stockings - which reduce pain, swelling; and improve the backflow of blood.
If you or a loved one is at risk of developing DVT and would like to take steps to prevent the condition from forming, start here:
- Stay alert for signs of DVT and predisposing factors.
- Avoid immobility, be active.
- Quit smoking.
- Reduce weight, stay healthy.
- Go for regular check-ups.
